Ever since we left Albuquerque, NM my wife has been breaking my balls about finding a really good asian food restaurant that serves awesome Crab Ragoon. It just so happened that I met the owner of the best Chinese Restaurant in ABQ and likely the best I’ve had since I left NYC, on a flight back to New York. Funny, the name was China Best. My wife fell madly in love with the Crab Ragoon when I took her there… and every time she got that craving it was a 5 minute drive from our house.
We’ve been here now for almost 3 years and we’ve been searching for a decent Asian Food Restaurant that could satisfy the Crab Ragoon cravings but to no avail. Here’s where the story takes a little twist. We were at my favorite place on The Strip for Margarita’s, El Segundo and we were hungry but not for Mexican. So I asked Mark, one of our friends and Managers there where he thought a great Asian place was. He couldn’t spit the name out fast enough… Jennie PHO at Valley View and Spring Mountain, which is literally a 3 minute drive from Fashion Show (Where El Segundo is located). We were now on a mission.
We got in the SUV made the right out of Fashion show Parking, another right onto Las Vegas Blvd, another right onto Spring Mountain and 3 minutes later we were parked, getting out and walking up the stairs to Jennie PHO. We walked into the cleanest Asian Restaurant I have ever seen… and meeting us when we walked in was the owner herself, Jennifer. I love it when that happens. She sits us at our table and you can just tell she is the General of this PHO battleground. She knows her menu because her and her husband Tony created the recipes and the Menu. I ask to recommend a PHO dish and she told me I should make my own with shrimp, raw steak and meatballs.
My wife asked about… you guessed it, the Crab Ragoon and Jennifer told us that if we did anything before we died, it better be to eat “her” Crab Ragoon. So we ordered the PHO she recommended, the Crab Ragoon, egg rolls, Young Coconut Drink and a Smoothie… sorry no alcohol yet. I loved the young Coconut Drink but my wife wasn’t too impressed with the Smoothie… but hey we make insane Smoothies at home so she’s spoiled rotten.
Of course like every first time I go to a restaurant something fucks up. Every thing came out perfect and expediently… except my PHO was missing the Raw Steak and Meatballs. I called Jennifer over… we’re best friends now… I told her that there was something missing and without a word she snatches the bowl of “hot” PHO off the table, went into the kitchen and lambasted someone, in the sweet words of a Vietnamese woman (you can see everything that’s going on in the kitchen, which looked like a well oiled machine) within minutes a new bowl came out with everything Jennifer recommended. She came over to check on us and asked us how everything was, she looked at my bowl and exclaimed “you forgot the best part”… and started squirting sauces from the bottles on the table and scooping “spicy” clumps into my bowl. It was awesome to see an owner take so much pride.
The spices were really the proverbial “icing” on the PHO. Everything was absolutely delicious. When we paid the bill my wife told me she couldn’t wait to come back. I know those Crab Ragoon cravings will be right around the corner.4480 W Spring Mountain Rd
